Your loss history tells a story.

An underwriter spent ninety seconds on your loss runs and added thousands to your commercial truck insurance premium. Here's what they saw — and what you should have seen first.

Your loss history is your resume as an operator. And most truckers have never read their own.

Loss runs are the official record: claims reported, dates, amounts paid or reserved, what's still open. An open claim from two years ago can cost you real money even if nothing was ever paid. Wrong dates, duplicate entries, claims that aren't even yours — they happen more than you'd think, and every one of them is money out of your pocket until it's fixed.

Request your loss runs every six months — not at renewal, when it's too late to fix anything. Carriers can take weeks to produce them. Starting the week your renewal is due means starting blind.

When you get them, go line by line: dates, descriptions, amounts, open items. Dispute errors with the carrier and get them corrected EARLY. Then give your agent everything they ask for and clarify discrepancies BEFORE submission. Explaining a messy loss history during underwriting is a losing position. A clean, accurate record presented upfront is how you have a real conversation about your options.

Set a calendar reminder. Mid-policy, not just at renewal — claims get reported, reserves change, and closed files sometimes linger as "open." Catching those issues mid-term gives you months to fix them instead of days. And a clean mid-term record is leverage when renewal quotes arrive.

Your loss history tells a story. Make sure it's the true one — and make sure you've read it before the underwriter does.
