New truck? Call before it rolls.

You just bought a truck. It rolls tomorrow morning. It's not on your policy yet. See the problem? Every week, owner-operators put new equipment on the road assuming coverage follows automatically. Sometimes it does — within strict limits. Often it doesn't. And "often" is where denied claims live.

Before the first trip, call your agent and confirm five things: the effective date of coverage, the VIN and vehicle details on file, the insured value, your limits, and any reporting requirements. Get the agent's name, a confirmation number, and the effective time — not just the date. A truck with the wrong VIN on the policy — or no VIN at all — is a claim waiting to be denied.

"But my policy has automatic coverage for new equipment!" Sure — with conditions. Time limits (often just days), value caps, and requirements to report the unit. "Automatic" does not mean unlimited. It does not mean forever. And it never means you can skip the phone call.

One call, ten minutes, and you roll with documentation instead of hope. Confirm IN WRITING that the unit is covered before it moves.

While you're at it, update your IRP, IFTA account, and state permits for the new unit at the same time. Insurance, registration, permits — they all need the correct VIN. Handle them together and nothing slips through the cracks while the truck is already earning.

Do not assume. The most expensive word in trucking is "probably."

Coverage depends on your policy and endorsements — no exceptions. Stop hauling on hope. Get your trucking coverage reviewed by people who speak trucker: legacyshiftinsuranceagency.com

New equipment also means new IFTA and permit obligations.
