Motor carriers should understand how roadside activity, inspections, and reported safety information can affect their safety profile. The FMCSA Safety Measurement System organizes data into Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories, commonly called BASICs. The purpose of learning the categories is not to memorize labels. It is to identify where daily operating habits create risk.

The Seven BASIC Categories

Use Data for Coaching, Not Just Punishment

A good safety manager looks for trends by driver, vehicle, terminal, lane, and violation type. One event may need correction, while repeated events may show a process problem. Coaching should be specific: explain the behavior, the risk, the expected standard, and how improvement will be measured.
